Research on digital innovation in telehealth is a fast-growing area of research that involves digital technologies (artificial intelligence, digital platforms, big data, etc.) and their underpinning health services, which enable telehealth based on longitudinal health data. This research is multidisciplinary and combines business, economics, and innovation research, but also data science, application and systems engineering, and medicine. Research in this area focuses on a number of key themes. Firstly, it assesses the effectiveness of the use of technology, examines the problem of data quality and security, and explores the experience, behaviour and attitudes of patients and doctors towards this innovation. In addition, the impact of telehealth on socio-economic systems is explored.

International research in this area is also essential. This can include benchmarking that assesses telehealth systems in different countries and their capacity and capability to develop and deploy digital health innovations. In addition, it analyses how innovations are transferred between countries, e.g. remote patient care in different European countries, and how this can benefit global healthcare. The exchange of patient data between countries, international opportunities for cooperation and the analysis of global health trends are important aspects of internationalisation.

This research is necessary to develop common standards, improve international cooperation and ensure that telehealth is adaptable to different countries and cultures, contributing to changes in the global health system.

Remote patient monitoring (RPM).
Remote patient monitoring is a part of the healthcare process that acts as a multisite digital platform linked to portable and wearable hardware to monitor patients at home or at work, to provide medical advice and to implement and monitor a treatment plan. The NPS improves access to healthcare, especially for people living in remote areas or with limited mobility. NPS also allow patients to personalise, predict and involve themselves in their care, which leads to better outcomes.

The impact of digital technologies (addiction/disengagement) on a person’s physical, emotional health and cognitive performance.
Digital technologies can have a variety of impacts on a person’s physical, emotional health and cognitive functioning. For example, the use of social networks can affect emotional health by causing stress, depression or sleep problems. Similarly, constant screen time can negatively affect cognitive functions such as attention and memory. This is an area of very limited research today. It is important to understand the impact of these technologies and, where appropriate, to strike a balance between their use and healthy lifestyles.

Research on patients’ and healthcare professionals’ experiences with telehealth solutions.
These studies are designed to assess the effectiveness and impact of these technologies on the healthcare delivery process. Studies often look at patient satisfaction, the quality of the services they receive, the ease of communication with health professionals and the ease of use of the technology. In addition, it examines professionals’ experiences and attitudes towards telehealth solutions, including their ease of use, impact on work efficiency and ability to ensure patient safety and privacy. This research is important to understand how telehealth technologies can be integrated into the healthcare system, improving the experience and quality of services for patients and health professionals.
